Grand Rapids Public Schools Library Media Services is a team of passionate readers sharing the love of books district-wide.
I walked in a school library yesterday and immediately walked over to the shelf where a young girl was searching out her "just right book". My guess is she was probably about 4th grade, just a guess since we got so deep into book talk I never got the chance to ask her. We talked about books we liked and the ones we didn't like. We shared the love of the old classics, Charlotte's Web and Laura Ingalls Wilder to name a few, but best of all, we discovered that we share a strong passion for all of the "Black Stallion" books by Walter Farley. That did my heart good as I read them over and over in elementary school and to know that the legacy of my favorite childhood series continues.
Good readers become great leaders, empowering a person to grow, expanding views on life, allowing you to travel wherever you want to go in virtuality. When you come back from your world travels, books can be a counselor at your side. If you don't care to travel, go out and ride a dragon or become a detective within the pages of a mystery.
Within those pages, wherever you go or whomever you become, just get out there and live a thousand lives in a thousand different settings. Let the pages of a book be the experience that leaves you thirsty for more.
"A book has but one voice, but it does not instruct everyone alike." - Thomas Kempis
