Of Numbers and Stars, The Story of Hypatia by D. Anne Love

 Our volunteer reader, Mrs. Ann, shared D. Anne Love's book Of Numbers and Stars, The Story of Hypatia with Congress students last week.  This was a real history lesson of an ancient Egyptian scholar.  Many didn't know who she was and many didn't know she was a woman!  From Alexandria, she was raised as if she was a favorite son, because most girls did not learn to read and write. Her father chose to educate her and gave her freedoms to explore like a scientist -discover the natural world as if she we conducting experiments and observations.  She became an authority in math, astronomy and philosophy and was a teacher.  This is a great picture book to teach about the ancient world.

A FRACTURED CLASSIC - C.Koslek

We love to read tales with a twist at Sherwood Park and we had fun with this one. This book is a another take on the classic Goldilocks tale. It begins in the usual once upon a time manner and progresses step by step through the familiar tale with the twist being the nature and appetites of goats. 

This story reinforces sequencing, matching and sorting as well as a moral lesson- all in an enjoyable quirksome way.

Suspense thriller that will keep you on edge!

"Tell No One" is a suspense thriller that does exactly what it says!  Dr. David Beck has had a very hard time getting back to life after the death of his wife - eight years to be exact... then he receives an e-mail from her
with a phrase that only the two of them know.  Mystery and intrigue follow, but who can he trust? 

I could not put this book down....  excellent reading for grades 9 - 12.

Burton Elementary - "Farmer Duck" by Martin Waddell

This week in library at Burton Elementary, we read the story "Farmer Duck", written by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. This is a great story about a farm where the farmer sits in bed all day eating candy while the duck does all the hard work around the farm. Everywhere the duck goes the lazy farmer asks him how the work is going, to which the duck replies, "quack". This is a great story to get kids thinking about the ideas of fairness and justice. You can ask questions like, "is it fair that the farmer gets to stay in bed all day eating candy while the duck does all the hard work?", or "do you think that the other farm animals did the right thing to help their friend the duck?", in order to get your young readers thinking about what the message of the story is.

Young students will enjoy the understated humor of how the farm animals communicate complex ideas to each other through simple sounds like "moo", "baa", "quack", and "cluck".

Esta semana en la biblioteca de Burton, leímos el cuento "Farmer Duck", del autor Martin Waddell y la ilustradora Helen Oxenbury. Este es un muy buen cuento sobre una granja donde el granjero se queda todo el día en la cama y el pato hace todo el trabajo duro de la granja. Una y otra vez, el granjero perezoso pregunta el pato, "¿cómo te va en el trabajo?", y el pato dice solo "cuac". Este cuento es muy bueno para los niños les hacer pensar en "¿qué es justo?", y demás.
